Game On: March 6 - July 13, ACMI

ACMI in Melbourne is presenting the exclusive Australian season of Game On, an exhibition covering the history of major international videogames. The exhibition showcases games culture, from original illustrations of Mario and concept sketches for Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto to rarely-seen consoles and arcade machines. It also features the best of Australian-designed games.

Exhibited will be rare early arcade games from the late 70s and early 80s and home consoles and personal computers from the past 30 years including working versions of the Magnavox Odyssey (1972) - the first console to make videogames playable on the TV screen – and early PCs such as the Commodore 64 and the Sinclair Spectrum.

Amongst the highlights of Game On: an examination of sound design and music in games, Australian-developed games, online games and original games artwork.

Game On is all about the history and future of videogames and games culture, and will feature over 120 playable games, most of which will be presented in their original formats. For example, Space Invaders will be playable on the original cocktail table machines which populated the pubs, milk bars and arcades of the late 70s, while GoldenEye (still considered one of the best first-person shooter games of all time) will be playable on its original platform, the Nintendo 64.

Sounds like a lot of edu-taining fun.

1+1=3 has two double passes to give away to the first people that can answer the following question (in one word, or less): What seminal videogame did Allan Alcorn design for Atari in the early 70s? Email your answer, name and address here.

Update: first double pass to Kate of Elwood... and yes, I believe the name of that game wasn't perhaps used in the UK (being a slang word and all)?... second double pass to 'Woosha' of Hawthorn. Of course, the answer is PONG. (Insert joke about the smell of the fast-food joint where you ate Chiko Rolls, drank Passiona, wore your 'Starsky' coat and played videogames – here).
